Our city is quickly reaching a milestone of one million people. However, for us to remain sustainable and competitive, we must continue to be prepared for more growth as we become a city of two million. As more people choose to call Edmonton home, we will see increased needs for housing, green spaces, better transit and more programs.
As we move forward, we need to be ambitious in our outlook and clear in our intention. This is why members of City Administration are putting together a guiding document, The City Plan. This foundational document will help to ensure we are building a vibrant city now and well into the future.
The City Plan is about building on the many assets we have inherited and preparing to become the city we aspire to be as we grow and evolve. It describes the choices we will make to achieve the goals of ConnectEdmonton, Council’s Strategic Plan. Essentially, it’s the physical growth plan that will take the city’s goals and put them into action. These goals are Healthy City, Urban Places, Regional Prosperity and Climate Resilience.
Ultimately, The City Plan will define where and how these priorities translate into the physical spaces and infrastructure we build, whether that’s better options for how we get around, new connections to support businesses or more choices for how we live our everyday lives. We are currently one year into a two-year planning process and we have heard from a variety of stakeholders, citizens and businesses about how they want their Edmonton to look.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this plan will shape the future of Edmonton and am excited to see where it will take us. You can read more about The City Plan here.
